NOSH: How to Help
Just as biodynamic practices use an ecological and ethical approach to farming, food, and gardening, here at Valentines Farm we believe the same philosophy should be applied to our community at-large. That’s why last year we partnered with NOSH, one of our favorite local initiatives, to provide fresh produce in their efforts to combat hunger and lack of food access during the Covid-19 pandemic. But now they need help from all of us. Recently, NOSH suffered a catastrophic fire, meaning that it’s time to step up and support an amazing organization that in-kind has provided so much support to the North Shore community.
On the morning of Tuesday, August 24th, a fire consumed Glen Cove’s VFW building, which since April had been home to the North Shore Soup Kitchen and NOSH, two vital, totally volunteer-run charities that serve our community’s most in-need residents with nourishing, locally-sourced meals. While North Shore Soup Kitchen’s operations have been paused due to the pandemic, their partner organization NOSH had stepped in to provide bags of groceries to North Shore homes impacted by the pandemic. Every week, they’ve delivered 300 “NOSH Bags” to homes in Bayville, Glen Cove, Glen Head, Lattingtown, Locust Valley and Sea Cliff. NOSH Bags are emergency meal kits that include ingredients to prepare two meals for a family of four, with extra bags allocated for larger families. NOSH even has a volunteer dietician who assesses bag contents to make sure the ingredients provide proper, balanced nutrition for children and adults.
While the fire disrupted their short-term ability to conduct the work of serving over 600 families in our community, NOSH is committed to building back stronger than ever. Currently they are operating from a temporary location at the St. Hyacinth Church's school gym until November 28th. The address is 319 Cedar Swamp Road, Glen Head, NY 11545. Those in need can go there to pick up food Monday through Friday, 10am – 1pm.
If you’d like to help NOSH/North Shore Soup Kitchen by providing a charitable donation, non-perishable food, or assistance in securing a new permanent location, please go HERE or visit their website directly.
We deeply appreciate all your support in helping to rebuild and fulfill NOSH’s mission to provide to our most vulnerable residents during this pandemic, and to finding a new headquarters for them and the North Shore Soup Kitchen which has been a cherished part of our community since 1989.
